  • New Apple Watch model with LTE nears mass production

Shipments will jump to 20 million in 2018, the suppliers said.

Digitimes sources in the supply chain for the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) Watch say that 4.5M units should ship in Q4, bringing the 2017 total up to 15M units.

Since Apple doesn't share Apple Watch sales and shipment numbers, the estimates are coming from parts suppliers.

The sources pointed out that smartwatches' high prices, weak battery life, overlapping functionalities with smartphones, and not yet fully integrated ecosystem have prevented demand from reaching expected levels.

Apple plans to increase shipments of its Apple Watch, signaling there's a growing appetite for its smartwatch. A software update will eventually bridge this communication gap, but the reason why this gap is being made in the first place is that Apple reportedly wants negotiations with phone carriers to be carried out in an amenable fashion.

The latest rumors around the Apple Watch corroborate this report and mention that the new watch will be offered in similar 38mm and 42mm sizes, as well as a similar design (some slight changes are possible, though). Unfortunately using eSIM tech will mean that LTE connectivity will be limited to certain countries and markets.
