With the street in Barcelona being a popular tourist destination, packed with people during a summer day like that of August 17, the fear is that the amount of injuries could be great.

Two people have been arrested after a van plowed into a crowd in Barcelona's Las Ramblas district, killing at least 12 people and leaving 80 others hospitalized, officials say. The area has been cordoned off, CNN reported, and people are being advised to avoid the area.

A van crashed into pedestrians, with local media initially reporting "at least 13 people" had been killed and dozens more injured, per Nick Harley, Hannah Strange, James Rothwell and Victoria Ward of the Daily Telegraph. In a tweet, the Catalan government has asked citizens to not pass through the area attacked by the terrorists.

Following a suspected terrorist attack in Barcelona, The Associated Press has revealed that Spanish police have confirmed fatalities in the incident, but the number of people killed has not been revealed.

Over 230 suspected jihadist terrorists have been arrested in Spain since the start of 2015.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy Brey also responded, saying, "In contact with all administrations".

A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil, Spain's national police force, told ABC News the man who rented the van has been identified as Driss Oukabir.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said on Twitter that his thoughts were with the victims of "this barbaric terrorist attack".

President Donald Trump tweeted: "The United States condemns the terror attack in Barcelona, Spain, and will do whatever is necessary to help".

The van drove in to people at around 5pm local time, injuring 50 people. "I saw a woman right next to me screaming for her kids", Aymar Anwar told Sky News. Train and metro stations were closed in the area, according to local newspaper La Vanguardia.

Police also said a driver had run over two police officers in a town north of the city, but it was not clear if this was related to the attack. "Then the whole street started getting pushed back".
