  • SA police issue 'red alert' for Mrs Mugabe amid diplomatic exit talks

Grace Mugabe‚ the wife of Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe‚ has presented herself to South African police and is due to appear in a Johannesburg court on Tuesday.

Grace Mugabe was still in South Africa, it added, contradicting earlier reports that she had returned to Zimbabwe.

Gabriella Engels, 20, told South African media Grace had attacked her after the model had gone to see the Mugabes' sons Robert and Chatunga at a hotel on Sunday.

According to South African police, Mugabe has applied for diplomatic immunity to protect herself from possible assault charges.

"The suspect's lawyers and her government representatives made verbal representations to SAPS investigators that the suspect wished to invoke diplomatic immunity cover and thus she elected to change her mind about the warning statement", the ministry said in a statement.

The official told The Citizen she would be granted diplomatic immunity and be deemed immune from facing any charges as soon as her husband landed in the country.

Engels said she was attacked with an electrical extension cord. "When Grace entered, I had no idea who she was".

Hong Kong readers may recall the fiery first lady having been similarly accused back in 2009.

The police ministry says it will not be arresting Mugabe until it receives an official indication from Dirco.

The conference also revealed that the organisation has written a letter of demand to Police Minister Fikile Mbalula. "She has a penchant for abrasive and thuggish behaviour that is completely inconsistent with the decorum and decency expected of a First Lady", said MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu.

The first lady's whereabouts are not known but she is believed to still be in South Africa.

Engels also attended the press briefing, but AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel said she would not be addressing the media.

"Her security guards and bodyguards just stood and watched that happen, I was pleading with her for mercy, I was crying out for help at the top of my voice". They said the suspect could not be named as she had not yet appeared in court.

"I doubt very much that a diplomatic passport was gazetted for her".
