  • Trump approval falls to lowest level ever in Gallup poll

There is no denying that Donald Trump's presidency is struggling, and the latest Gallup poll indicates just how bad it has gotten. Trump has consistently been in the news over the past week, including the continued focus on North Korea, even while taking a working vacation at one of his golf properties in New Jersey.

The Republican president's job approval rating hit 34 percent Sunday compared with a 61 percent disapproval rating that put Trump in an unenviable historical class, according to Gallup's most recent numbers. A 34% approval rating is an indication that Trump's support has softened with Republicans and that his base is shrinking by the day.

Previously, Trump's worst numbers were an approval rating of 35% in March, and a disapproval rating of 60% in June. This is the first time independents' weekly approval rating for Trump has dropped below 30%.

The Gallop poll was done over a three day period ending Sunday, meaning that some of the respondents participated in the poll before the violence in Charlottesville and Trump's controversial response to it.

Trump's highest three-day reading to date has been 46%, recorded most recently on January 23-25, shortly after his January 20 inauguration. Former presidents George H.W., Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter and Harry Truman all reached a 34% low during their tenures, according to Gallup.

Compared to a year ago, former President Barack Obama had a 52% approval rating and a 44% disapproval rating from August 8 to August 14, according to Gallup. Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, never did.
