The 20-year-old was arrested Saturday and faces charges including second-degree murder after he allegedly drove a vehicle through a group of counter-protestors who were speaking out against white nationalist marchers. This whole white supremacy, racial dominance thing.

"I didn't know it was white supremacist", she said.

A auto drove into a group of counter-protestors in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Military records show Fields entered the Army on August 18, 2015.

After being told about the white supremacist goal of the rally, Bloom said she was under the impression her son was merely attending a political rally - not a nationalist march.

Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old paralegal, was killed in what police are calling a deliberate attack.

James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Maumee, Ohio, has been charged with second-degree murder, among other charges.

Judge Robert Downer held Fields without bail due to his lack of ties in Charlottesville and assigned him an attorney.

James Alex Fields of Ohio's arrest was confirmed by the local jail superintendent and he is now being held without bail for the murder of a 32-year old woman. Far-right activists flocked to Charlottesville for the rally while hundreds of anti-fascists turned up in a counter protest.

In a Twitter post, the group said it had handed out the shields "to anyone in attendance who wanted them", and denied Fields was a member.

The mother of the man believed to have driven into a crowd of people during the clashes in Charlottesville over the weekend was unaware that her son was attending an extremist rally.

She said she thought the rally "had to do something with Trump", adding "Trump's not a supremacist". Meanwhile, President Trump's criticism on the incident has sparked a backlash, as he condemned "hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides", failing to explicitly denounce the role of white supremacists.

Federal authorities are holding a civil rights investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Bloom said she tried to "stay out" of Fields' "political views".
