Maria Sharapova receives main draw wildcard into US Open

  • In the mix Maria Sharapova has been given a US Open wildcard

In May, she was denied entry into the French Open, but the selection committee has lifted her ban so she can play in NY.

Sharapova tested positive for the banned substance meldonium at the Australian Open a year ago. The ruling determined that Sharapova was not guilty of doping but was not at fault for taking Meldonium after it was added to the banned substance list by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The Russian has only played nine matches since returning to the tour in April and her world ranking of 148 was too low for entry into major tournaments. And as part of a reciprocal agreement with the USTA, Tennis Australia will award one additional main draw wild card to a player who will be announced at a later date.

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova was granted a wildcard for entering the Grand Slam series tournament, the US Open, following her lengthy absence from this type of tournaments, the official website of the tournament reported on Tuesday.

But the United States Tennis Association have ignored their feelings - and those of many others in the sport - to give the 2006 champion a free pass into the main draw.

Sharapova was denied her bid for a wild card in the French Open in May by the French Tennis Federation.

In an extract from her soon-to-be-released autobiography, Unstoppable: My Life So Far, Sharapova details how the relationship between the pair fell apart after the Wimbledon final in 2004.

Sharapova was one of eight players who were granted wild cards for the 2017 US Open, including Americans Taylor Townsend and Kayla Day.

She suffered an arm injury during her first-round win over Jennifer Brady in the Stanford Classic earlier this month. Sharapova must be eager to return to the major she won in 2006.

The US Open runs from August 28 to September 10 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows, New York.
