Real Madrid Set For Barcelona Clash In Spanish Cup

  • EPAIsco scored Real Madrid's second goal in the Super Cup

After previously struggling to establish himself, Isco emerged as one of Real's key players in the closing stages of last season as the club captured La Liga and Champions League honours.

Modric will be free to return for the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

The Spanish global had less than 12 months to run on his existing deal at the Bernabeu and had been sensationally linked with a move to rivals Barcelona as well as Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal.

The 21-year-old versatile star rose to fame in the last campaign under the management of Zinedine Zidane and therefore, attracted interest from big teams.

Real Madrid's Marco Asensio celebrates after scoring their fourth goal during the UEFA Champions League final against Juventus. The two teams face off over two games in the Spanish Supercopa for the first time since 2013, starting with the match at Camp Nou on Sunday.

Real are obviously keen not to fall into the same trap as Clásico rivals Barcelona, who lost superstar Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain after the French club triggered his €222m clause.

The only relevance that Barcelona's easy 5-0 win over Chapecoense could have was the good performance by Gerard Deulofeu, who filled in for Neymar.

Despite the breakup of Barcelona's fabled MSN forward line, Zidane is still expecting a typically imposing challenge from Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Co.in what will be Ernesto Valverde's first taste of a competitive Clasico as Barca coach.

Zidane admitted "there aren't many players" with Neymar's individual qualities, but claimed his absence would not give Madrid the upper hand over the two legs in four days with the second leg of the Super cup to come at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Asensio only joined Real Madrid three years ago, for a paltry £3m, and Real could be tempted by the huge increase they would make on the attacking midfielder.
