'It doesn't get much better' - Everton hero Rooney savouring second chance

  • West Ham United v Everton- Premier League

Niasse spent the second-half of last season on loan from Everton at Hull City, scoring a spurt of goals despite the Tigers eventual relegation down to the Championship.

In the end, the Potters ran out of ideas, and the Blues picked up an enormously important victory to start the campaign. Kick-off time is scheduled at 3 PM UK time.

Koeman knows Everton can do "much better" and expects his new-look side to become a more cohesive unit as the season progresses, pointing to the string of big-name players out through injury.

Before all that though, the Toffees at least get to start the league season at Goodison Park, versus Stoke City.

The former Burnley enforcer was signed at sizeable expense over the summer and it was clear to see why Everton were so willing to splash the cash on the England worldwide. The presence of elements such as Wayne Rooney, Sandro Ramirez and Davy Klaassen should help them offset the loss of Romelu Lukaku, while Jordan Pickford is likely to provide quite a boost on defence. And starting with a win over Stoke would be quite a way to state their intentions to the rest of the league.

Midfielders Ross Barkley and James McCarthy are out with groin and knee injuries respectively. And winger Aaron Lennon will be a game-time decision due to a minor knock suffered in training this week.

"Everybody is looking forward to the start of the Premier League and is ready".

It's what they have lost that is troubling.

"We can improve and spend money but everyone can improve and is spending money".

Stoke City will be nearly at full strength ahead of this game with the exception of Ibrahim Afellay.

He'll really enjoy being back and we could see Rooney really enjoying his football this season.

Stoke have not been almost as active in the transfer market, but they recently acquired Kurt Zouma from Chelsea on loan. Interestingly, both the players are heavily linked with a move away from the club this summer. Setting the bar too low could make fans, players and club owners question if they have the right manager for the job.

However, other teams have also gone on a recruitment drive over the past two months and look to add a few more before the summer transfer window closes on Aug 31 in hopes of strengthening their final league standing by May next year.

It was the former Manchester United captain's first goal for his boyhood club since 2004, and Goodison Park shook to its foundations when the ball hit the back of the net.
