Bills' rebuild continues with two-trade Sammy Watkins shocker

  • Bills trade WR Sammy Watkins to Rams, CB Ronald Darby to Eagles

The Eagles upgraded the cornerback position Friday, which for those keeping track could have been done by plucking one of the names of the available street free agents from a hat.

Darby started 29 games for the Bills the last two years.

Friday's decision to trade wide receiver Jordan Matthews and a third-round draft pick to Buffalo for cornerback Ronald Darby seemed on the surface like just such a move, one that might not take into account the intangibles lost by jettisoning an ultra-popular player like Matthews, who is instrumental in building a winning culture.

Buffalo also continued stockpiling 2018 draft picks by getting the above-mentioned third-rounder from the Eagles and a second-round selection from Los Angeles. "I just said, 'That's part of the business.' Obviously he knew how I felt with Jordan being one of my best friends".

Once you get past the depth of Hollins and Agholor, the Eagles didn't have much to show.

In what quickly became a blockbuster day around the National Football League, former Florida State cornerback Ronald Darby was traded from the Buffalo Bills to the Philadelphia Eagles.

"This is not a throw-in-the-towel thing at all", Beane said. A glorified gadget player (despite ludicrous comparisons to DeSean Jackson), the former eighth overall pick ranked 123rd out of 154 qualified receivers in yards per reception last season.

"He's got rare speed", Roseman said. "You look at Brandin Cooks' situation". "It's hard to find teams that have a lot of corners, and having all these guys who are 21, 22, 23 years old. You can never have enough of those guys". For now, the Eagles will have a new look at cornerback and the Bills will have a new look at wide receiver.

Darby is a tackler, his 69 stops ranking fourth on the Bills last season. He caught a record 112 passes his senior season. They inquired about free agent relic Darrelle Revis and asked the Seahawks what it would take to get Richard Sherman.

Before the trade, Mills and Robinson were the projected starters, with Brooks the top slot guy.

Is Ezekiel Elliott a third round pick?

The Eagles also like the fact that Agholor brings a different skill set to the position than Matthews did.

Wentz wasn't the only Eagle to share how beloved Matthews was in Philly - tight ends Zack Ertz and Trey Burton posted about how Matthews made an impact on both of their lives.

Matthews was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft out of Vanderbilt.

Matthews had been Philadelphia's most productive receiver, averaging 75 catches, 891 receiving yards and six touchdowns in his first three seasons.

"We'll continue to develop him and work him in multiple spots", Pederson said. "His production on the ball, he doesn't have a high interception number but his (passes defensed) number is incredibly high".

"You just don't do (this trade) for the now", Snead said, "although we do think he will help the now".

Things could certainly change if Jeffery comes in, stays healthy through the season and performs like a No. 1 receiver as he did in Chicago and Smith proves to be the flawless compliment.

Losing Matthews as a teammate was a brutal reminder that the National Football League is a business. "Jordan was said leaving his boys".
