  • Ruling was designed for the sole purpose of disqualification claims the ousted premier

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif - who was disqualified last month by the Supreme Court for hiding assets in his nomination papers for 2013 elections -on Wednesday kicked off his journey from Islamabad to reach Lahore via GT Road. Though Nawaz still holds sole authority to appoint anyone to any post but he consults party before major decisions.

Sharif's rally comes a day after firebrand opposition cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri returned home from overseas despite pending court cases against him in Pakistan.

Kaira also asked Nawaz Sharif to apologize for his mistakes.

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) through the notice told the PML-N that Mr Sharif can not lead the party after disqualification under the Political Parties Order 2002.

Sharif was the 15th prime minister in Pakistan's 70-year history - roughly half of which has been spent under military rule - to be ousted before completing a full term.

Football star Lionel Messi was spotted in a rally supporting ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif as the latter journeyed his way home to the eastern city of Lahore.

Speaking to enthusiastic supporters at the rally after nightfall, Sharif said "this mammoth crowd in Rawalpindi is in fact the start of a revolution".

A plan to address supporters in Islamabad was cancelled due to security reasons and paucity of time, party leaders said. "Promise me you won't allow your prime minister to be humiliated this way", he said.

He, however, continued as the president of PML-N.

Muqam is travelling in a bullet-proof vehicle, according to sources.

Not everyone who braved the sweltering heat at the rally in Islamabad supported Sharif, however.

Sharif, 67, embarked on a roadshow from Islamabad to his ruling party's stronghold Lahore yesterday in a show of strength ahead of the crucial general elections next year.

The PML-N is banking on its workers for making Sharif's return to his hometown a "historic" occasion to get the much-needed political mileage in the face of the challenges its government is facing. Sharif also announced that he respects the decision despite serious reservations.
