Contaminated eggs supplied to Irish food businesses, says FSAI

  • The health crisis of fipronil in eggs has continued

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a recall for egg sandwiches and salads from British supermarkets after revealing that up to 700,000 eggs sold in the United Kingdom may have come from European farms linked to a contamination scare over a banned insecticide.

France's agriculture ministry confirmed that 13 batches of Dutch eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil were delivered to France between July 11 and July 26.

The insecticide can damage people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands if eaten in large quantities.

It emerged today that this was a false assurance and that potentially contaminated products were still being...

The FSA had originally said British food safety inspectors were trying to trace 21,000 eggs imported from affected farms in the Netherlands between March and June.

But it said it was very unlikely that there was a risk to public health.

"However, fipronil is not legally allowed for use near food-producing animals and it shouldn't be there". Processed food products are likely to have been affected, including salads and sandwiches made by Sainsbury Plc, Wm Morrison Plc and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s Asda.

The eggs at the centre of the scandal have mainly come from the Netherlands, followed by Belgium and Germany.

Dutch and Belgian prosecutors earlier this month opened a fraud investigation into how fipronil, which can harm human health, got into the food chain. The raids, which included the home of a vet, are said to have produced 'incriminating evidence, ' NOS writes.

Dutch investigators have detained two men suspected of being involved in the illegal use of a pesticide at poultry farms that sparked a massive food safety scare in several countries.

"The Dutch investigation focused on the Dutch company that allegedly used fipronil, a Belgian supplier as well as a Dutch company that colluded with the Belgian supplier", prosecutors said.

However, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) says the eggs are "unlikely" to be a risk to public health when consumed in low doses.

It also emerged on Thursday that two managers at a Dutch company had been arrested during joint raids by Dutch and Belgian authorities.

"All major United Kingdom retailers stock British Lion shell eggs and tests have shown that there is no risk from British eggs".

Germany and the Netherlands have also accused Belgium of failing to disclose contamination, even after it began showing up in tests, resulting in later unnecessary recalls, though Brussels says it did not intend to cover up the incident.

Mr Ducharme added: "If we had seen this information communicated to our respective agencies, vigilance concerning Fipronil would have been greatly increased".
