Minnesota Governor calls Bloomington mosque blast 'act of terrorism'

  • Minnesota mosque bombed during morning prayers

The bomber appears to have thrown an improvised explosive device through the window of the imam's office at around 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning, right around the mosque's call to prayer.

"We're here all together in order to defend the values of our country, the values of our faith, the values of our people", said Hamdy El-Sawaf, president of the board of the Islamic Community Center of Minnesota. Omar told multiple news outlets that the mosque has been the target of threatening messages recently.

The governor of Minnesota denounced an attack on a mosque the previous day as a "terrible, dastardly, cowardly" act of terrorism.

The director of an American mosque that was bombed on Saturday says he believes Donald Trump's divisive campaign was to blame for the attack by creating a hostile environment for Muslims in general and for Somalis in particular. "He seems to want to tweet about security and terror issues". Not only is he now in the midst of a 17-day vacation in Bedminster, New Jersey, but he unloaded a series of tweets this morning, attacking the media, polls, and Democratic Sen.

Omar also said his community was grateful for the support it had received since the incident, including from other religious groups, with visitors continuing to drop off flowers and donations.

Nobody was hurt in the explosion, but the blast damaged the imam's office across the hall from the worship space.

Mr Omar was preparing for early morning prayers when the blast happened.

When asked by KSTP-TV whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation considers the attack a hate crime, Thornton responded: "We simply don't know that at this point. And then the White House will make its comments". "Our national leaders must acknowledge and counter the alarming rise of anti-Muslim sentiment and related hate crimes against American Muslims and those perceived to be Muslims, such as the Sikh community who one year ago today were themselves victims of a heinous hate crime". The Minneapolis office has not made a declaration of terrorism but Rick Thornton, the special agent in charge of the Minneapolis office, called the investigation "our top priority".

The Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota affirmed its solidarity with the Muslim community in the wake of an attack on a local mosque.

"Just hold your horses, count to ten, and the President will do what he deems fit", he said.
