  • Korean missiles add urgency to Hiroshima A-bomb appeals

The UN scribe made the call on Sunday in NY in his message to mark the anniversary of the dropping of atomic bomb by the United States on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

While many are celebrating the long weekend across the province, others are in mourning.

But the threat lends a deeper sense of alarm in Hiroshima, where 140,000 died in that first A-bomb attack, which was followed on August 9, 1945, by another that killed more than 70,000 people in Nagasaki.

"This hell is not a thing of the past", said Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui in his peace declaration at yesterday's ceremony.

During Saturday's vigil in Concord, local veterans and peace activists celebrated two recent votes at the United Nations and the U.S. Conference of Mayors to ban nuclear weapons.

However, the commemoration has been overshadowed by the escalating threat posed by North Korea.

Tillerson aide R.C. Hammond says that after a productive first day, Tillerson has taken time to prepare for Day 2.

"To this end, it is vital that you deepen your awareness of the inhumanity of nuclear weapons, consider the perspectives of other countries, and recognize your duty to build a world where all thrive together", he said. "There are too many nuclear bombs in the world". Tensions between the USA and Russian Federation are the highest they've been since the Cold War and friction with China continues. While there he called for an end to nuclear weapons.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged all states to intensify their efforts in pursuit of a nuclear-weapons-free world.

"The states possessing nuclear weapons have a special responsibility to undertake concrete and irreversible steps in nuclear disarmament", Guterres stressed, warning against the continued presence of some 15,000 nuclear weapons and risky rhetoric regarding their use.

In 2016, then-President Barack Obama visited Hiroshima, becoming the first USA president to ever visit the city.

Matsui referenced the treaty's adoption, saying that with "this development, the governments of all countries must now strive to advance further toward a nuclear weapon-free world". North Korea is in violation of worldwide law and of U.N. Security Council resolutions by conducting the tests.

USA officials said the second missile had flown for about 1,000km and had landed off the coast of Japan. "Because that's how I started thinking about peace - by meeting 'hibakusha, ' including my grandmother and hearing their stories".
