  • Tributes are pouring in for Australia's four-time Olympic gold medallist Betty Cuthbert

Betty Cuthbert, the only runner to win Olympic gold medals in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter sprints, has died following a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

"It's very sad to lose such a great champion", Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates said.

The result ensured Cuthbert became the first Australian to win three Olympic gold medals at the same Games.

Cuthbert remained strongly religious throughout her life, a quality to which she attributes her fortitude in the face of adversity.

"We are saddened to confirm the passing of Olympic legend Betty Cuthbert, our thoughts with her family and friends", confirmed agencies.

In 1985 Cuthbert was elected into the Australian Sports Hall of Fame.

"Betty was an icon of Australian and global athletics and it is with great sadness that we learned of her passing this morning", stated Arbib.

"Betty is an inspiration and her story will continue to inspire Australian athletes for generations to come. I'm so happy I got to meet such a tremendous and gracious role model, and Olympic champion".

"RIP BettyCuthbert. Thank you for everything you did for our country in the sporting arena!"

"She said "I think I'm going to pull a hamstring".

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten both sent messages of condolence.

"Rest in peace Betty Cuthbert - an inspiration and a champion on and off the track", he posted on his official Twitter account.

"Betty was the Golden Girl of the track and a national heroine".

Olympian Raelene Boyle said Cuthbert left a large legacy.

Gosper recalled bumping into a nervous-looking Cuthbert in the post office at the athletes' village on the morning of the women's 100m final in Melbourne.

"It was the only ideal race I have ever run", she later said of that victory.

She remains the only Olympic track athlete to have won the 100m, 200m and 400m and she set nine world records during her career, four of them in 1958, in the 60 metres, 100 yards, 200 metres, 220 yards and 440 yards.

Among her many honours, Betty was named a Legend of Australian sport, made a Member of the Order of Australia and has an MS therapy and education centre named in her honour at MS Australia's office in Perth.
