The operation was turned to a recovery effort at around 3 a.m. Sunday, and next-of-kin have been notified, according to a statement from III Marine Expeditionary Force.

The search for three Marines missing after a "mishap" Saturday near the east coast of Australia has been called off. But three marines remain missing despite an air and sea search.

Twenty-three personnel were quickly saved following Saturday's incident involving a MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor, the main assault support aircraft for the Marines.

Osprey have been a part of mishaps resulting in death or injuries in recent years.

Last December, an MV-22 Osprey based at Futenma ditched off Okinawa's coast, injuring five crew members.

"I can confirm no Australian Defence Force personnel were on board the aircraft", Payne said in a statement.

The mares are now operating with the Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group as part of a regularly-scheduled deployment in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Trump and Kelly are in Bedminster, New Jersey, on what aides have described as a 17-day "working vacation" for the president that began Friday.

The Osprey aircraft was in Queensland as part of a joint training exercise between the Australian and U.S. military forces.

The aircraft was still in Australia after completing a joint U.S.

The Osprey, built by Boeing Co and Textron Inc's Bell Helicopter and created to take off like a helicopter and rotate its propellers to fly like a plane, has suffered a series of incidents in other parts of the world. The biennial exercise involved about 30,000 troops and 200 aircraft.

If confirmed, it would be the greatest loss of life in a military training accident in Australia since 18 servicemen died in a counterterrorism exercise when two helicopters collided near Townsville in 1996.

More recently, two US troops were injured when a Marine MV-22 made a "hard landing" during an operation in Yemen in January.

She had also briefed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and spoken with US Defense Secretary James Mattis to offer Australia's support.
