  • Anderson upsets Thiem at ATP event

Rohan Bopanna and American partner Donald Young further lost 5-7, 4-6 to fourth seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the men's doubles quarter-final, ending India's campaign at the tournament.

India's Yuki Bhambri suffered a disappointing loss against 15th seed Kevin Anderson at the ATP Citi Open and thereby brought an end to his impressive campaign.

Anderson saved a match point before dispatching the World No 7 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (9/7) in a thriller that lasted two hours and 46 minutes.

World No. 9 Nishikori, whose victory was only his second in seven meetings against 32nd-ranked del Potro, will face American wild card Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals.

Nishikori, the 2015 Washington victor, beat three-time champion Juan Martin Del Potro 6-4, 7-5, for only his second victory in seven matches against the Argentine 13th seed.

Bhambri will be motivated to post another win in Washington, but he has to be at his best to even test Anderson, who has a better experience of playing at big stages. Notably, the latter entered the quarter-final after saving a match point to beat world number nine Dominic Thiem on Friday.

Bhambri got broken twice in the first set as he went a set down 35 minutes into the match.

The third set tiebreaker is where things really became tense. "I have nothing to lose", said the 25-year-old Delhi lad.

Anderson has never shared a court with Bhambri except in workouts. "Hopefully, I can win a few more matches here", Bhambri revealed. He comes in and attacks. "It's a challenge. If I'm taking care of business on my side of the ball, then I give myself the best chance", Anderson said.

Eighth-seeded Jack Sock dumped Jared Donaldson 7-6 (6), 6-2 in an all-American matchup.
