  • Vijender Singh shows off his moves practices with trainer Lee Beard ahead of Zulpikar Maimaitiali bout

His last fight was in December, 2016 when he successfully defended his WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title against the Tanzanian pro boxer francis cheka.

A third and equally crucial element here of the Zulpikar camp is the boxer's father, Maimaitiali, who was a boxer himself but struggled to find quality amateur and professional competition back home in the 1980s when pro boxing was nearly unheard in China. The 31 year old will go up against China's Zulpikar Maimaitiali, in a victor takes all fight, today in Mumbai.

"I don't consider him an experienced boxer".

India's star professional boxer Vijender Singh is gearing up for his much-anticipated bout against China's undefeated, left-handed fighter Zulpikar Maimaitiali for a double-title fight, which takes place this Saturday. A confident Vijender has dubbed his Chinese opponent as inexperienced. "There is a lot of responsibility on me, because it's India-China and the situation is bad". It's fight time, I'm fit and I'm ready. I don't think there is any challenge. My trainer Lee Beard told me to stay calm and don't be in a hurry because during the bout everyone in the stands will be backing you. Zulpikar turned towards professional boxing in April 2015.

"[Maimaitiali] has had just eight fights so far".

Vijender started the fight on the back foot but managed to get his momentum back after the third round. Hometown hero Vijender Singh (8W-0L, 7KOs), the WBO Asia-Pacific titlist will have the crowd cheering for him in his twelve round bout against Chinas Zulipikaer Maimaitiali (8W-0L-1D, 6KOs), who holds the WBO Oriental belt. Vijender has not competed in any match after defending his title in December a year ago. Apart from the age factor on his side the 23 year old also is a southpaw which earns him a decent advantage over Vijender who would bet on his orthodox methods in the fight.
