Curry, of the National Basketball Association champions Golden State Warriors, carded a four-over 74, not quite a Jordan Spieth-like performance, but enough to finish the first round ahead of several professionals at the Ellie Mae Classic in Hayward, California.

Former PGA champion Jason Day added: "To be honest, I think it's pretty special for a two-time MVP to be able to shoot 74 at a pro event and beat other pros".

Curry has shown his fans on social media that he enjoys playing a round or two during the off-season, but most people never thought he would play a professional round of golf.

"I obviously thank Ellie Mae and the Web.com for giving me this opportunity because it was a dream come true for sure". "I hit some good shots, and it gets you thinking if I had some to time to actually practice and pursue some coaching, I could take my game to the next level".

A bogey on the last was not the ideal way to end his day, but Curry was already looking ahead to Friday's second round.

Curry, who reportedly has a 2 handicap, was given an over/under of 76.5 for his lowest round by British bookmakers (via Golf.com), so he easily exceeded those expectations in both rounds. "So hopefully I can do that tomorrow".

"I had to try to take a deep breath and still there wasn't anything I could do to prepare myself for that moment". "So I think he just closed the club face and took a smack at it and he did it". He then settled in and found his form on the back, rattling off four straight pars before birdieing the 14th and 17th holes, ultimately playing the back at even-par.

"We want to get used to those crowds", Jaeger said.

"My wife's probably hot at me because all day yesterday, that's all I was doing was checking out the who-said-what type of thing", he said.
