Chelsea hijack Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk deal

  • Micky Quinn says Liverpool can win the title if they sign Virgil van Dijk this summer

Chelsea, the report says, has hoped that it will be able to persuade Southampton to sell to it rather than to Liverpool as Conte's team has not pursued Van Dijk as heavily. The center back has been made to train on his own for the last three weeks, but Saints are still hopeful of ending the standoff amicably.

Instead their focus appears to be elsewhere, with Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk and RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita among the players targeted over the summer.

"We continue in the same way", he said.

If the Reds are willing to stump up that kind of fee for Van Dijk, they'll undoubtedly get their man.

The Southern Daily Echo have stated that Van Dijk has told his club there is "no change in his situation, leading the club to inform him that they are also standing firm".

Van Dijk has gone on strike at Southampton after handing in a transfer request so the player is clearly desperate to leave and Anfield is still reportedly the place he wants to go.

Whether Liverpool will get the green light from Southampton remains to be seen as the Saints recently suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at home to FC Augsburg in their pre-season friendly.

The Netherlands global has been one of Jurgen Klopp's priority targets for the summer window, although Liverpool were forced to issue a public apology to Southamtpon earlier this summer after details of the German's persistent pursuit of the player were made public.

The Keita deal looks destined to fail, and reports have emerged today of Chelsea's £50m interest Van Dijk.

"Everybody is panicking because players are coming in from overseas or from lower Premier League clubs, but I think the team showed they were good enough to compete for a trophy".
