However, the pollster said large percentages of those who were surveyed said they do not think Trump is honest, that he does not have "good leadership skills", that he "does not care about average Americans", and that he "does not share their values". Trump's highest Gallup approval rating was 46 percent on January 25.

The poll's findings also mark a new high for the president's disapproval rating, which now stands at 61 percent of voters.

Fifty-four percent of voters report that they are embarrassed to have Trump in office, while 57 percent believe he is abusing his presidential powers.

"It's hard to pick what is the most alarming number in the troubling trail of new lows for President Donald Trump", said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, in a press statement.

Trump claimed the FBI investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and Russian officials is "fake news" but voters disagreed. Trump won 63 percent of white male voters last November.

More than two-thirds of voters, or 68%, say transgender people should be able to serve in the military, according to the poll.

60 - 32 percent Republicans disapprove.

Last week, President Donald Trump sparked outrage when he announced via Twitter that transgender troops would no longer be allowed to serve in the military, citing high medical costs as the explanation. FiveThirtyEight, the polling website spearheaded by statistician Nate Silver, estimated that Rasmussen had a mean-reverted bias that skewed conservative by two percentage points.

The recent death of the GOP's party-line effort to overhaul former President Barack Obama's signature 2010 health care law, the Affordable Care Act, also raised the specter of electoral pain for Republicans on Capitol Hill. It has a margin of error of 3.4 points.

RealClearPolitics, after aggregating the last 10 national surveys released between July 12 and August 1, found that Trump had an average approval rating of 38 percent and an average disapproval of 57 percent.

Frequently cited by journalists, public officials and researchers, the independent Quinnipiac University Poll regularly surveys residents in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and nationwide about political races, state and national elections, and issues of public concern, such as schools, taxes, transportation, municipal services and the environment.
