'Trump wants USA commander in Afghanistan Gen Nicholson fired'

Mr. Trump, according to several administration officials, has been considering a shake-up that could include appointing Mike Pompeo, the C.I.A. director, to take over as national security adviser, while sending General McMaster to command forces in Afghanistan.

Officials said Trump argued that the United States should demand a share of Afghanistan's estimated $1 trillion in mineral wealth in exchange for its assistance to the Afghan government. Trump, according to NBC, said the consultant offered bad advice to the restaurant's owner while asserting that it may have been better to talk to the wait-staff instead.

But Trump's advisers, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, came away from the meeting frustrated as well.

Considering that Trump has no military experience and dodged draft on five different occasions, it would be absurd to think he would understand the complexities of war or how the USA forces can not put a sudden end to it just because the commander-in-chief wants to be a victor.

Mattis, McMaster and other top aides are putting together answers to Trump's questions in a way to try to get him to approve the strategy, the officials said.

"That strategy has been worked carefully in the interagency process and while no decision has been made the president's team continues to develop options for him that addresses the threats and opportunities to America arising from this vital region", the spokesman continued.

Mattis told Congress that the strategy would be decided upon by mid-July but the plan has been delayed for months amid sharp disagreements between national security adviser H.R. McMaster, who is arguing for an increase of several thousand troops to help turn the tide in the fight against the Taliban, and the President's chief strategist Steve Bannon, who is opposed to getting the United States more deeply involved in the conflict.

Trump is the third president to grapple with the war in Afghanistan.

Another official said Trump pointed to maps showing the Taliban gaining ground, and that Mattis responded to the president by saying the USA is losing because it doesn't have the strategy it needs, the news channel reported.

Receiving regular gossipy dispatches from behind the scenes at the White House is one of the few silver linings of the Trump administration. "That afternoon, the walk took longer than usual".

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, defended Nicholson, saying, "I can't think of a good reason to fire the general. And he has earned my full confidence", McCain said in a statement.

McCain said Nicholson "has served our country with honor and distinction for 35 years". He has earned the trust and admiration of those he has served with.

"Eight years of a "don't lose" strategy has cost us lives and treasure in Afghanistan".
