  • The plane a Boeing 737 had been waiting to taxi to its arrival gate when the teen opened an emergency exit jumped out and ran away

A teenager has been detained after opening the emergency door of a passenger plane and sliding down a wing onto the tarmac minutes after touching down in San Francisco.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m.as Copa Airlines Flight 208 from Panama was waiting to taxi to its arrival gate, according to a statement released by airport spokesman Doug Yakel.

A crew member shut the door and the plane safely taxied to the gate, the airline said. Other passengers said he seemed anxious and fidgety during the flight and that he acted very quickly, making it hard for anyone to stop him.

Yakel said the teen was not injured and air traffic was not affected.

"It was as if he was like flying out, like it was really fast", Sophia Gibson, a passenger who lives in San Jose, told local NBC affiliate KNTV. And then he just starts running the other way. The passenger has been taken into custody by law enforcement. "And everyone was just screaming".

The airline says it is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation.

There have been other similar incidents before where passengers have tried to jump off planes. She tried to flee and ran towards the terminal when she was detained the by the police, CNN had reported.

The teenager, who has not been named, then slid down the wing onto the tarmac after it landed on Tuesday. A man from Arthertor named Matt Crowder, who was also traveling on the same flight, said that the people who were sitting near the exit stood up in shock and started shouting as soon as the boy jumped off.

"They were yelling, 'Tell the flight attendants".
