Top Lashkar-i-Toiba commander Abu Dujana was killed on Tuesday along with his associate in an encounter with government forces in Pulwama district of south Kashmir. Dujana and his accomplice Arif Nabi Dar alias Arif Lelhari were shot dead by security forces during an operation in Hakripora village.

27-year-old Dujana, who figured at number one in the list of "most risky terrorists" released by the Army in June this year, had taken over operational command of LeT in late 2015 following the killing of Abu Qasim. Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in some parts of the Jammu and Kashmir.

The state government has also closed all the educational institutions, blocked Internet services and ordered suspension of rail services to prevent protests in the wake of killing of LeT commander Abu Dujana, his aide and two civilians.

Acting on information about the presence of Dujana and Lalihaari, security forces surrounded the village at about 3 am on Tuesday and the house.

"The situation remained under control during the day as police and security forces were deployed in the Valley to maintain law and order", a police official said.

This is for the first time that state police has made a decision to approach Pakistani authorities to take back the body of a militant since the eruption of militancy in 1990 during which hundreds of Pakistani and other foreign militants were killed in encounters with security forces in the state.

Villagers said troops blasted two civilian homes with explosives during the operation.

Meanwhile, clashes broke out between the security forces and stone-pelting protesters as news of Dujana's death spread.

A statement issued by the police later, however, said that the civilian was injured near the encounter site in the crossfire and later died in hospital.

Three protesters were admitted to hospitals with bullet injuries and several others sustained pellet injuries in the clashes.

The police said Dujana had broken loose from the LeT in last few months after which he established close proximity with Zakir Musa, who was recently appointed the head of Al Qaeda terror outfit in the Kashmir Valley.

Khan said all the overground operatives who helped terrorists to carry out the attack on Amarnath pilgrims on July 10 in which eight people were killed had been arrested. We have also seized vehicles involved in the attack.

On June 1, the Army had released a list of top 12 militants active mainly in Jammu and Kashmir's southern districts, falling in two categories of "A" and 'A++' and belonging to the Hizb-ul-Mujahedin (HM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM).
