Earlier in the day, the Income Tax department raided a resort on the outskirts of Bengaluru where 42 Congress MLAs from Gujarat were holed up to avoid poaching by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat at Eagleton Golf Resort in Bengaluru.

Income Tax sleuths on Wednesday began searching the residence of Karnataka Minister D.K. Shivakumar in the city and a luxury room he was staying at a private resort here, an official said.

Karnataka Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah on Wednesday condemned the Income Tax department raids on state minister DK Shivakumar as politically motivated.

Maintaining that the searches were being conducted at 39 other places and "not at this resort", Jaitley said the searches 'should not be linked to the Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat'.

"I wanted a small part of it; because no one should say tomorrow that they (IT officials) had not gone to the resort", he added.

The Congress has fielded senior leader Ahmed Patel as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat, and he can win the seat if 47 MLAs vote for him.

As per government officials, the directions to use NOTA in Rajya Sabha elections were enforced in January 2014 after the Supreme Court in 2013 made it mandatory to have NOTA option in EVMs.

The Income Tax department has recovered a total amount of Rs. 10 crore, including Rs. 2.5 crore from Bengaluru.

The Congress has accused the BJP of "stealing" its MLAs in Gujarat ahead of the polls and have flown them to Bangalore to ensure their safety.

"The search team has no concern with the MLAs and there has been no contact with MLAs and the search team", the department said in a statement.

The raids commenced at 7 am today at all the places simultaneously. Congress President Sonia Gandhi's political advisor and close confidant Ahmed Patel is contesting the Rajya Sabha poll from Gujarat.
