But when Ricciardo attempted to overtake Verstappen going into turn two, a mistake from the Dutchman lead to him locking up and making contact with Ricciardo's vehicle.
"We have talked about racing incidents happening, and I see that as a racing incident". It's just frustrating - it was not even an overtaking move.
With the debris cleared for P2 to begin once again, with little over 10 minutes to go, it didn't turn out to be a great run for Williams' Felipe Massa who, on account of experiencing a sudden gearbox problem, headed back to the base.
"It was, of course, not what you want".
It was especially galling for Red Bull to have achieved such a spectacular goal at the circuit on which they expected to have front-running pace.
"I'm sure the other teams will bring a bit more tomorrow, but I also think we have a bit more to find."Unfortunately for Ricciardo, Verstappen locked his front tyres and understeered into Ricciardo's sidepod, causing severe damage to his Red Bull auto.
'Especially with the relationship that I have with Daniel, it's always really good. "I don't think he likes when a team mate gets in front", he added.
The impact sent him into a spin, damaged the radiator and left his Red Bull stranded on track with the safety auto deployed.
Asked if he'd expect the team to deal harshly with Verstappen, Ricciardo said everyone would have their say. Yet Hamilton again looked out of sorts and set a series of laps several tenths off his teammate before the rear of his auto got away from him under braking for Turn 1 on his final lap and he had to take to the run off.
Ricciardo had jumped from sixth to fourth, overtaking Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, but the Dutch teenager ran wide at turn two and as he returned to the track, he slammed into the side of his team-mate's auto.
Their boss, Christian Horner, said that the pair had been warned about crashing during a rare paddock visit for team owner Dietrich Mateschitz. It all started the corner before. Ricciardo, who maintains fourth place in Formula One championships standings, had passed the 19-year-old into turn two to move up to fourth having started from sixth on the grid.
"Dan had the corner, he (Max) should have conceded".
The championsip resumes at the end of August with the Belgian Grand Prix.
He said his reaction to the incident would depend on whether Verstappen "acts like the age he is, or if he acts like a man and admits the mistake".
"We may have a shot at actually fighting for big points this weekend", he said. What happened shouldn't have happened.
The team-mates started the 11th race of the season positively, both jumping the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton on the first turn at Hungaroring.
